Finally moving to hardy

Well, long time but worth the patience. I am finally upgrading to Hardy Heron alpha 2 release. Yeah it says that it is an alpha release and hence I should not use it on production machine. Mine however is more than production machine. I have my all important stuff in here including my ongoing assignments. I just wished that they are all blown off and no questions were asked by the profs :).

Anyways the process of upgrading is right now on and I am waiting for it to complete. But couldn't help writing this post as the up gradation is going on. Two ways you can have Hardy alpha release on your machine.

Download the ISO file and burn it on a CD and make a fresh install.
However if you are already on Gutsy, you just have to hit ALT+F2 and type gksudo "update-manager -d" with quotes. Be patient as it'll take some time to pull the hardy repos and upgrade it. BTW, don't forget to upgrade your copy of gutsy before upgrading.

Amazing naming convention of Ubuntu, which I already have talked about in my previous post. I was wondering what would happen when the alphabet reaches Q, X, Y etc.

I think one major concern that I have from Gutsy is the fact that repositories need improvement. I mean while downloading updates it should open multiple threads to download stuff and make it faster for users to get their version updated.

Theme Expectations from Hardy Heron

We’re getting a new theme in the next release? Ubuntu has used close
to the same theme since Warty Warthog – about 3 years, The REALLY
interesting bit about this is how far this reaches… proposed changes
include changes to the installer, bootup screen, wallpaper, application
splash screens like Gimp and OO.org, Compiz effects, cursors, and even
skinning WINE! This is going to be quite a bit of work, but in the
end, well worth it.

Expectations from Hardy Heron II

How about another list of expected features. This is from a user on Ubuntu Forum and I think it's a smart request.

1) Drivers...drivers...and drivers

2) Enhanced Network stack and management

3) True embedded configurations that should have been in Gutsy, but weren't

4) More Storage enhancement such as ZFS, and better support for SoftRAIDs

5) Enhanced scheduling, better determinism

6) More better drivers. Have I listed this before?

7) Real time kernel

Multicore development tools

9) Enhanced Windows migration and interaction (file sharing) support

10) Better out-of-the-box Sw RAID support!!!

Updating Firefox

Just in case you are wondering like me about the latest update of Mozilla Firefox, which updated from 2.0.0.10 to 2.0.0.11 within a week, I tired looking for the reason and found that the update was due to a bug. When Mozilla released Firefox 2.0.0.10 Monday, it included a bug in its rendering canvas HTML elements. Canvas elements allow for dynamic, scriptable rendering of bitmap images in HTML.

The bug affects a specific use case of the Canvas tag, which is not yet in wide use," said Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering at Mozilla. The new version, Firefox 2.0.0.11 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download. users with Firefox 2.x will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. The update can also be applied manually by selecting Check for Updates from the Help menu. It is strongly recommended to check your version of Firefox and if it is not 2.0.0.11, get it updated.

By the way how about the following as a canvas for Firefox. Wish I had the canvas to lay myself on :).

Expectations from Hardy Heron

On the post with the above blog title I'll try to post a list of expectations from Hardy Heron. I am going to pick up some of them from official Ubuntu Forum. Here is the first post.

1) Improve boot and login speed that got worse since Feisty. Improve startup time of applications.

2) Fix problems with font rendering in OpenOffice.org.

3) Finish pulseaudio transition: The idea is to make PulseAudio the default sound system on Ubuntu,replacing the Esound Sound Daemon (esd) and ALSA dmix. PulseAudio is adrop-in replacement for Esound, but adds new features, opening it formany entirely new areas.

I envy (Love) myself...

Sometimes I envy myself for being so smart :). How in the world could I register this blog name with blogspot. I fyou don't know what I mean. I just registered this blog that has the name of next release of Ubuntu. It's called as "Hardy Heron". There can be 2 reasons for this. Either Ubuntu or to be precise Hardy Heron is not that popular or blogspot has lost it's charm. I'll be writing and sometimes would be scrapping about the famous Ubuntu and it's up coming relase, Hardy Heron. Keep your eyes open and get Nirvana by being part of open source.
